Aquaphobia

Aquaphobia is more common than you might think. Millions of people in the UK, and around the world, suffer with varying degrees of water phobia. If you feel uncomfortable in the water or you don’t know exactly what to do in the water or if you are in fear of it, there is one thing you need to know: you are not alone! According to statistics supplied by the RLSS UK from an official UK national survey, 12.8 million people won’t go into a swimming pool in the UK due to fear and 4 million adults in the UK will not even get in a bath. Plus, there are many millions more who will not go into the sea. People who have aquaphobia develop it either as a result of a traumatic experience early in life or because they never learnt to swim or had professional lessons. As a result, they have developed an anxiety towards water and avoided all contact with pools, rivers and the sea.

While fear is a natural human emotion that protects people from potential harm, anxiety is an intense fear that can be triggered long after the initial cause, if any, is removed. A phobia is anxiety related to specific situations that are out of proportion to the actual danger. This means that phobias can be overcome through guidance and gradual exposure.

What is the next step?

The best thing to do would be to get in touch with our Aquaphobia Coach and have a conversation in regards to planning a graded progression for you to improve your level of confidence and knowledge of aquatics and/or overcome your fear.

Aquaphobia Coaches are qualified, through the industry accredited Certificate in Teaching Aquaphobia (CTA) training courses (www.instituteofaquaphobia.com), to professionally teach water phobic people or non-swimmers, or anyone who does not like water.

Aquaphobia Coaches follow the Aquaphobia Learning Programme (ALP). The ALP is a 12-stage step approach to support those with a fear of water, providing them with the confidence, skills and techniques to overcome their water phobia and enjoy the unique freedom that being in water can give. We are here to help you whatever your current level of comfort is with the water.

Distinctive from swimming programmes, the Aquaphobia Learning Programme focuses on eliminating and desensitising fear, with the physical mechanics of swimming being secondary.

The aim of the programme is to teach a participant how to relax, float, feel happy and in control in the water and reduce all stresses in a safe and careful way thanks to Graded Exposure.

It takes considerable courage to get outside of our comfort zone and face personal fears head on. Often the individual’s fears and emotional barriers are at a higher level than the motivation to overcome those blocks, which can create a self-imposed fear trap.

If you are in need of help to overcome the fear of water and/or improve confidence and aquatic skills, please get in touch. Our Advanced Aquaphobia Coach will be happy to tailor a progression which is specific to you.
